Family Bible Time

My Family!
This is a different type of post.  I am asking for advice, here.  I have been trying to figure out how to start a family Bible time with my kids.  Rory has some Bible study included in his homeschool curriculum, but  it is really something he does by himself.  I am looking for a way to involve both kids - an eight year old and a three year old - in a meaningful Bible time every day.  This is not something I was brought up with.  We went to church and Sunday School, and sometimes spent time reading the Bible ourselves, but we didn't have a time dedicated to family study.  It seems that my husband had a similar upbringing.  As a result, I am not really sure where to begin.  So, I am inviting all of you to add your ideas to the comments section of this post.  If you have a blog post or other recommended reading on this subject, please include the link in your comment!  Thank you so much, and I look forward to reading what Bible time looks like in your family!

  1. Probably most of what we do now wouldn't apply to you, Robin since our children are much older. Here is a link to a post I did several years ago: http://heartsinservice.blogspot.com/2008/01/family-devotions.html

It was very difficult for us for a long time because Dan & I both never grew up on this tradition. I think if you find a good children's Bible and just read a chapter out of it and ask a few questions. Some of them have questions built right in. The point is to get them to interact with the Bible. It doesn't have to take long, just a few minutes to start a habit.

  2. Robin,
I have a Bible study time with my children in the mornings...where I read a chapter out of the Bible and then we pray. My children range in age fro 5 to almost 15. We discuss some afterwards and if there are words that I think they do not understand, we talk about that. I have found though that just reading over and over the Word gets into their minds and hearts and they remember so many things at this age. In the evenings, we do a family devotional where my husband read the Bible and then prays. He does not always read a full chapter though and he does more explanation that I do. A wonderful book on the effects of just immersing children in the reading of the Word would have to be "Ten P's in a Pod," by the Pent family. They didn't do anything fancy...just read the Word three times a day and prayed. The results on their children were amazing. I know Vision Forum has the book...haven't checked with Amazon. Hope that helps my friend. God bless you in your efforts to bring the Word to your family.

  3. Thanks so much for your responses! I am trying to put Bible time in at the end of breakfast at this point. I'm having a little trouble keeping Lily interested in the Bible stories, though. One of my friends gave me a link on Facebook for a neat looking curriculum (thanks, Brian!) which is for preschool - 3rd grade, so I could use it with both kids. In fact, it includes reading, writing, art and science activities, so I can use it for a preschool program for Lily, and extra things for Rory! Anyone who is interested, it is http://www.daniellesplace.com/homeschool/index.cfm
